Update of the JoAT, May 10, 2017

Rejected
Mass Refraction Alternator: This doesn't work for me without an illustration.

Peary: It looks okay but is too much of the kind of cut and paste work that we don't want to have.

Voyager class: Two nacelles are enough. Please don't ruin ship designs that look perfect the way they are.

On hold
Alternate Excelsior: is still worked on

Head/Refresher: An important topic! Especially on long shuttlepod rides. But I'd really like to see a picture of it (of the described system, not of its operation). So this is "on hold".

General Sci-Fi Discussion / Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017)

I don't care that much for anime or its adaptations and I'm not sure whether I'm going to see it, but it is pleasant for a change to read a review about Ghost in the Shell without a comment on "whitewashing".

And you're back with a great design! Some details like on the Miranda, but overall a bit like the little sister of the Nebula.

The Other Voyages / Re: Star Trek Fan Films

The new rules sound like a death blow to Star Trek Continues and New Voyages because these violate the rules #1 to #6. But somehow I have the impression they have a deal with CBS and will return.

We'd need to switch to a new software version. Right now I could only remove the outdated fields if I wanted.

The Other Voyages / Re: Star Trek Fan Films
« on: February 14, 2017, 06:08:19 AM »
As a consequence of the new fan film guidelines, Star Trek Renegades not only changed its name but also dropped any Star Trek references.
http://renegades.show/home/

Walter Koenig now plays just "The Admiral", the Federation becomes the "Confederation", and there are no Starfleet symbols any longer.

While this may save Renegades, it is sort of schizophrenic to do a Star Trek series and change all kinds of little bits while keeping it overall recognizable as Trek. Actually while it may be legally more correct the series now looks more like piracy than before.

Interesting design. Is the similarity to the TMP phaser intentional?

Perhaps the open beak is overdone, but it looks very cool.

I like this very much. Big simple shapes instead of too many spikes and greebles.

Artwork and Design / Re: Alternate Reality Constitution class (2235-2255)
« on: January 22, 2017, 04:52:23 PM »
Looks like a reasonable predecessor of the ships we saw. It is well possible that there was something like the original Constitution class although I doubt one would have been the USS Enterprise.

Wonderful! I think I need one for my desk too.

I like the idea of the "dome" on the engineering hull where the nacelle pylons run into the hull (like on the Prime Universe Excelsior).

Treknology Expert Forum / Re: Changing the way we think about Away Teams
« on: November 18, 2016, 08:07:08 AM »
This sounds much like a lost story concept for TNG. The revolutionary new holoemitter technology allows the away team to stay on board. But they use the technology on a planet whose inhabitants are infuriated when they discover everyone is just a hologram. And so these guys expose the holoemitter to some [tech] that causes the safety protocols of the holodeck to fail. The new technology is abandoned after this incident in favor of conventional away teams.

Wow. Very convoluted. It sort of reminds me me of the Jellyfish, but I don't suppose your ship has moving parts.

Great work!

But it looks familiar. Like Janeway brought this design from the Delta Quadrant:

Impressive! The boxy single parts are a strong contrast to the overall organic design.

Bulletin Board / Re: Nostalgia...jump on the bandwagon!!!
« on: September 01, 2016, 07:11:14 AM »
We launched the predecessor (ezboard) some time in early 2000:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010201200900/http://pub10.ezboard.com/btrektech.html

Then, in 2002, came the Infopop board (hosted by Charles Capps):
http://web.archive.org/web/20020802005541/http://scn.infopop.net/0/OpenTopic

The SMF forum was launched in 2006:
http://web.archive.org/web/20070807011840/http://www.subspace-comms.net/
http://web.archive.org/web/20110514160615/http://www.subspace-comms.net/

The most obvious change over the years in my view (besides the traffic that has gone down) is that the SCN was a project and a site feedback board but then became a community.

I'm usually not a big fan of very flat ships but this one is well done.

If they changed the NX to NCC after the Founding, then there probably wouldn't be an issue. Starfleet personal should be smart enough to differentiate a class name from a registry prefix.

Makes sense to me. But explain that to the fans who insist on NX-01 being the same registry system as NX-2000...

Some screen caps:

Source: http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/potential-spoilers-what-will-the-alternate-enterprise-a-look-like.279532/page-20

The changes I can identify:
- neck is no longer placed in the middle of the engineering hull
- neck is blended into the engineering hull now without the previous flange
- nacelle pylons appear to be straighter and thicker
- nacelles are more conventional, without the curved "engine hoods"
- nacelles are also farther apart than previously
- slope of the saucer edge is not as steep any more
- saucer may be smaller in diameter (or thicker)

23
I generally agree with what they wrote at TrekCore. It may be an old Warp 4 prototype ship that survived the Romulan Wars, entered Starfleet service but got an NX registry because it was the only one of its class. It makes sense that its transporter was built for cargo transport.

The only problems are:
- Would Starfleet introduce NX registries so soon after the NX class ships were commissioned? That would lead to a lot of confusion between registries on one hand and the class on the other hand.
- Scotty can make the old transporter safe enough for beaming many people at once, without the help of 23rd century technology. (Well, that may be a minor issue considering he also makes the ship ready for space travel, including warp drive and weapons...)

Added three designs:

The rest that was submitted is missing pictures, or the pictures need to be reworked substantially.
