Service History:
Design Stage
------------
In 2352, Starfleet's practice of using former frontline starships, such as the well known Miranda class, as construction vessels was becoming ineffecient.
Starfleet Command, specifically the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, wanted a small starship designed specifically for the task of constructing and repairing
spaceborne facilities. They sent their request to the Avanced Starship Design Bureau, expecting to recieve a notification that their ship was on the drawing
board. The ASDB, bogged down by the Galaxy and Nebula class project, told the SCE they could do nothing. So the top minds in the SCE got together and over
the next 5 years designed their starship. Tenatively called the Knight class, they presented it to the ASDB in 2357. However, during early warp field tests
in 2358, a warp field imbalance breached the prototype warp core, destroying the test vehicle. Luckily the test crew reached the escape pods in time. After,
extensively reviewing the test data, the SCE team redesigned the entire vessel, and renamed it the Skyhawk class. Presented to the ASDB in late 2360, and
after successful warp tests in 2361 and 2362, construction on the U.S.S. Skyhawk, NX-73294, begins at Margaritaville Fleetyards, Pacifica.
Construction Phase
------------------
Fabrication problems plagued the construction of the Skyhawk. She was also put on hold many times, as priority was given to other vessels, such as the U.S.S.
Enterprise (Launched 4 October 2363) and U.S.S. Odyssey, (Launched 13 September 2365). Construction was finally completed in 2367, and much of 2368 was spent
conducting field tests, warp trials, and fine tuning of the design. The U.S.S. Skyhawk was commissioned and launched on 18 April, 2369. The master of
ceremonies at the dedication was none other than Captain Montgomery Scott, newly assigned Commander of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. The Skyhawk was
escorted to the edge of the Sol system by 2 Saber class starships, the U.S.S. da Vinci, and the U.S.S. Musgrave, both vessels assigned to the SCE. Three
years later, after a problem free construction period, the U.S.S. Montgomery Scott, NCC-73897, was launched.
Early Service
-------------
Between 2369 and 2374, Skyhawk class vessels built more Federation facilities faster than ever thought possible, with a degree of quality never before seen.
In 2373, the U.S.S. Okuda and U.S.S. Sloan built Starbase 418, an eight month projected construction time, in five months, with no detectable flaws in the
construction, the Starfleet doubled production of the Skyhawk class. Similar exploits by other Skyhawk class vessels further cemented her place in Starfleet.
The Dominion War
---------------
In late 2374, when hostilites with the Dominion fell into open warfare after the First Battle of Bajor, the 15 Skyhawk class starships were grouped into
three task forces, Task Forces SCE 1, 2, and 3, each with five Skyhawk class starhips. The three groups were in constant action, repairing, salvaging, and
constructing frontline stations. Though not as well known as the four Saber class starships used by the SCE (U.S.S. da Vinci, Musgrave, Khwarizami, and
T'Pora), the 3 Skyhawk taskforces served with equal courage, valor, and dignity.
Postwar and Beyond
------------------
Since the Dominion's defeat at the Battle of Cardassia Prime in late 2375, the Skyhawk class vessels have been busy rebuilding all across the Federation.
From the repair of Betazed's defenses, to the reconstruction of Kharzh'ulla's orbital ring, Skyhawk class vessels are in high demand, leading to Starfleet's
order of five more, due in late 2380. The usefulness of the vessel has proven itself time and again, leading Starfleet to project its use at least into the
late 25th century.
