A couple of weeks ago, I submitted a starship design (USS Caronte), and when I reached the crew field, I really did not know what to write in.

Therefore, I decided to do a bit of research, mostly from ST:TMP

   Bridge: 11 posts x 3=33
   Engineering: 6+Scotty+3coming in, max:18 x 3=54
   Torpedo room, 6 x2 x3=36
   Maintenance crew =30 (based on office with ~ 900 PCs, 24/7)
   Security 8 x3=24
   Science =50
   Medical ~ 1/10th = 25
   Crew services ~ 1/10th = 25
Total = 277

I calculated that there should be 3 shifts for each post. The security staff might seem small, but we hardly see more than 2 or 3 of them in any movie / show at any time, and the science staff it's just a number. I guess it could change a lot according to the mission at hand.
If in my much smaller starship design I keep the same crew, just using one of the bigger decks from the primary hull will leave a huge average crew quarter of about 27 m2 (about 100 sq.f ?)

Has anyone tried to estimate the crew compliment before? (I would bet yes Wink )
Any comments regarding my estimates?

Welcome to the SCN!

We usually estimate the crew complement differently (and in an easier way). You've got a light cruiser of 215m length, launched in 2271. I estimate it should have roughly half the crew of the Constitution class. So anything around 200m would be good.
