^^^What about the extra features and commentaries you get from discs?

That's true and it's one downside I have with Netflix when renting or streaming something.  On the other hand, a lot of that material eventually ends up online anyway at some point, even via non illegal downloading methods.

Digital distribution via streaming is by no means perfect yet, but it's clear that is where the industry is heading, not only with film and television, but games and music as well.  I fully expect to eventually get to the point where I don't have to save anything on a hard drive in my home, and all media will all either be streamed into my home or stored in a Cloud.  And because I don't think its that far off, Blu-ray just isn't worth the investment to me.

Or the pure joy of seeing Troi's camel toe in remastered HD!
I wouldn't call that joy so much as horror....the horror.

Yeah, I wouldn't have gotten it if I hadn't wanted a PS3 for gaming.  And since blu-rays are now basically the same price as DVDs, I just get them because I can.

Doug Drexler has a new video up on his blog with some animated scenes expanding on shots from the 2012 Ships of the Line calendar, that is worth checking out.  It's also shows some good examples of what we were talking about before, in creating more dynamic shots that don't mimic the standard look of physical models being moved around on large cumbersome rigs.

He showed that before.  I love the way the shuttle moves while dodging that D7.

Not sure if this is the right section of the forum to post this question. Besides Dabo, DomJot, Tongo, Anbo-Jitsu, and the game brought by Fallow and the Wadi to DS9, What other forms of games and recreation were seen in the trek canon or non-canon universe? Specically, When I get ready to start modeling games for the casino complex, I want to have them have a certain authenticity.

Well, in terms of what's appeared on screen... 3D chess (a few variations), a few random board games (mostly the ones we saw in 10 Forward)... A couple of random video games (one involving bi-plane type fighters comes to mind the quickest)... For the most part, anything else we've heard about, but never seen.

Games and such in Star Trek... Methinks this might help: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Recreational_activities.

Anbo-jyutsu is more of a sport/martial art then a game so I'm not sure if it really fits with the theme of your casino ship.

Mmmm... I still love that NX-01 refit.  Would have dearly loved to see it on screen in action.

Want a $5000 model of the new timeline Enterprise?  Here you go: http://8of5.blogspot.com/2011/10/id-like-to-get-my-hands-on-her-ample.html
It's a nice lighted model, but $5000 is a bit much I think.  Personally, I'd rather spend that money on an actual filming model, if there are any even left after the auctions.  But since there is no official physical model of this new Enterprise, I guess this would be a nice alternative.  But still, even if I had the cash, I'd have second thoughts about dropping that much on any model.

Benicio wanted for 'Star Trek' villain

J.J. Abrams wants actor for Paramount sequel

Though most roles are cast in Paramount and Skydance's "Star Trek" sequel, the mysterious villain part was still available -- and now J.J. Abrams has made his choice.

Sources close to the project tell Variety that Benicio Del Toro is expected to be offered the part, possibly before the weekend is out. Insiders say Del Toro has met with Abrams but, in an effort to keep the role a secret, still doesn't know exactly what it is.

Par and Skydance had no comment on the casting process.

Abrams is back to direct with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof penning the script. Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, and David Ellison will produce through Bad Robot and Skydance Productions.

Production is expected to start in early 2012.

Del Toro most recently finished production on Universal's "Savages."

November 30th (at 8 or 9pm IIRC) on the Science Channel they're showing a show called "Trek Nation" with Gene Roddenberry's son (Rod) talking about him and Star Trek.

^I don't know all the details, although I did see Lucas in the commercials for it.

In other news, looks like the Abramsverse sequel might start filming January 15th and might not get released until 2013.

‘Star Trek’ 3D Sequel To Open May 17, 2013

Quote
Sony moved Roland Emmerich’s Singularity from May 17th, 2013, to Nov 1, 2013. So now Paramount is grabbing that primo pre-Memorial Weekend date of May 17, 2013 for its much anticipated writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel (which is really No. 12 among the Captain Kirk/Mr Spock star fleet movies). No title yet. But this one is being co-written by Abrams with Lost‘s Damon Lindelof, plus Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci. But JJ is going to be making the movie in 3D. The first of Abram’s rebooted franchise opened May 8, 2009 for a $79M weekend and ultimate did $258M in North America and $130M international at the box office. The pic is being produced by all those writers and Bryan Burk, who is JJ’s Bad Robot production partner. It is anticipated that David Ellison’s Skydance will be co-financing the film with Paramount. All key cast members will be returning, like Chris Pine and Zach Quinto and Zoe Saldana.

Paramount took a real risk rebooting what many thoiught was a tired franchise played out but the studio wound up with another potent franchise. That’s because Abrams’ reboot widened well beyond Star Trek‘s rabid but older fanbase and attracted a new and younger audience. (Paramount marketed the movie as “not your father’s Star Trek”.) And the critical reviews were 96% positive. The goal of the new pic was to finally attract more filmgoers overseas since the franchise had never done $100M international before.

As for the sequel, Abrams had to finish Super 8 so there was no way he could make the June 29, 2012 release date that Paramount initially had carved out for the film. (The studio gave that slot to its other sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation.) Abrams had been hunkering down with writers Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof to work on the Star Trek script. The studio exercised its option on the cast and they would be ready when Abrams was.

I was really hoping it'd be out next year, but it seems they're taking their time, which I guess is better then rushing through it.  Still, I have no interest in seeing it in 3D.

Me neither. In fact, I've figured out what bugs me about stereoscopic 3D: you're still being forced to focus on the screen despite looking at something that's pretending to be closer or further away. That's also the reason 3D images always seem to have such unnatural clarity, since the foreground and the background will be in focus at the same time. But it seems they're actually working on fixing that.
Steady on.

Some possible casting news for Trek II or Trek XII, whichever you prefer, regarding Del Toro and Alice Eve.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118046803

Quote
J.J. Abrams' second installment of the "Star Trek" franchise is gearing up, as the director has chosen Alice Eve to join the ensemble cast, playing a character that's believed to be new to the canon.

Paramount had no comment on the involvement of Eve, who doesn't yet have a deal in place -- but is expected to soon. Benicio del Toro, whose deal is also pending, is Abrams' choice to play the villain, as Variety first reported Nov. 4.

Most of the cast from the previous installment is returning, including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

Abrams is back to direct with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof penning the script. Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, and David Ellison will produce through Bad Robot and Skydance Productions. Production is expected to start in early 2012 with Paramount planning to release the pic on May 17, 2013.

Teresa Palmer ("I Am Number Four") and Hayley Atwell ("Captain America: The First Avenger") also tested for the role, but Eve ("She's Out of My League") won out.

As is common with Abrams, secrecy has surrounded the pic since the helmer officially announced he would be back -- including which characters the new actors will play. Sources say Eve's character is new to the "Star Trek" universe, unlike del Toro, would insiders believe will be playing someone familiar to Trekkies.

Abrams has just one more major role left to cast; sources say it could be another villain, someone who's older and in more of a supporting character to del Toro.

Eve, repped by UTA and Untitled Entertainment, was most recently seen in the last season of "Entourage" and can be seen next in Relativity's "The Raven."

More casting news.

Peter Weller has apparently been cast in an unknown role.  Anyone think he might be playing the same character from Enterprise.  I doubt it, but I guess there's always a chance.
