December 7th, 1941

"a date which will live in infamy" - President Roosevelt.

Today is the 65th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Oahu, primarily Pearl Harbor.  For me the attack has always been a particular interest of mine in WWII history.  So I'm just taking a moment to make this post to remember all the American servicemen killed that day.

I also have made it a tradition to watch The Final Countdown.  A movie made in 1980 in which the USS Nimitz CVN-68 leaves Pearl Harbor in the present and is thrown back in time to Dec 6, 1941.  Once they realize where and when they are, and unable to warn Pacific Fleet about the impending attack it becomes a question of, "you have the power to stop a devastating attack and save thousands of lives" what do you do?  Do you alter history?  Stop the attack, which would delay America's entry into WWII or let history take it's natural course.

^^^You know Ive seen little snippets of that movie but Ive never seen the whole thing.

Speaking as the grandson of a WW2 vet I'm obliged to say...

"Remember Pearl Harbor"

I'm just sorry to say that it actually got overshadowed by a greater tragedy in my lifetime.
“The boat dipped and swayed and sometimes took on water, but it did not sink; the two brothers had waterproofed it well. I do not know where it finally fetched up, if it ever did; perhaps it reached the sea and sails there forever, like a magic boat in a fairytale. All I know is that it was still afloat and still running on the breast of the flood when it passed the incorporated town limits of Derry, Maine, and there it passes out of this tale forever.” ― Stephen King, It"

It's also a shitty 80's hair metal song.

This was the theme song for the movie? I didn't know that.

It is used every time you have, who would have guessed it, a countdown...like on new years eve or like a chartshow. I may even say overused, but than again, as you said, its a great song. Pure classic. Flagg doesn't know whats good, how should he?

He hates America, so it doesn't suprise me, that he hates Europe too :D

No that song had nothing to do with the movie.

Nope, just the same title as the film. The song came out about ten years or so after the movie I believe.

You should rent the movie, it's really good. The FX are dated now obviously, but the film still holds up. I always do movie marathons with "The Final Countdown," "Black Sunday," "Firefox," and "Blue Thunder" when I have to clear the estrogen from the room. ;D

^^^Too much estrogen poor baby  ::).  Though if I need some violence I usually pop in the Evil Dead trilogy perhaps TCM.

I saw bits and peices of "Final Countdown" years ago.  Wish I'd seen more of it as I love those types of time travel movies.

Oh god, the necromancy powers!  They burn!! BURN!!

And yet feel strangely appropriate in this case.

BURN!... but good call.

Nice pics. It's been a long time since I was last there, but it's a very powerful experience. Still seeing the oil rising from the ship is remarkable.

Thanks.  I really liked the way the one of the flag from inside the memorial came out with the sun in the corner.

"The Final Countdown" is a great movie.

OK, I know you said this 2 years ago, but...seriously? I thought it was going to be an awesome movie when I got it from Netflix. Time traveling ship gonna kick the shit out of the Japs? How could it go wrong? But they didn't actually fight or anything (except for like 2 scout planes)! The only thing I was looking forward to was to see some F-14s take out some Zeroes. But no, they had to go back in to the present before they did anything cool. So frustrating.

Seeing an Iowa Class in person is quite remarkable as well. You just can't help but being in awe of the thing. I wish I had my camera when I visited the USS Wisconsin. Theres a sidewalk that runs not even 15 feet from the bow of the ship that would have been a great place to get a picture of the ship.

Don't make Bond of Christmas Past defend his movie choices!

While I still think the movie is great despite the fact that it discusses the potential consequences of changing the past rather than just showing a full-on battle, this would be one of the older movies where I'd like to see a remake because it can take the opposite tack from the original: Have the Nimitz utterly destroy the Japanese fleet with spectacular FX, only to find that when they return to Pearl Harbor that the lack of a Japanese attack on Pearl caused the US to remain out of the war long enough for the Axis to win or reach a permanent stalemate in Europe.

Having the Nazis invade the US is unrealistic and cliche, so a more likely scenario would be either a Cold War like situation between the two powers, possibly with it resulting in nuclear war at some point since Hitler would be unstable enough to actually do it. Show the consequences of their actions in full and end the movie on a total down note.

Yes, I think that would be a fantastic plot for a movie.

Of course, I love Guns of the South...
